Ryan Ruocco is a play-by-play announcer for the WNBA and NCAA Women's Basketball on ESPN. He is bald. Like I will be someday. Sometimes when he is calling a game and a player hits a Big Shot, he shouts "YOU BET!" when the ball goes in.
When a player shoots a basketball a certain amount of Time elapses before it reaches the net. With very minimal research, one could get an estimate of how much Time that is on average. That estimate would be wrong. It is always Eternity.
Because once the ball leaves the player's hands there is nothing anybody -- not the players, coaches, fans, nor God -- can do to affect the outcome of that shot. All we can do is watch.
Watch and hope.
Watch and hope and think.
Watch and hope and think about whether or not we deserve the ball to go in the hoop. Whether or not we have done enough good. If we have been devoted enough fans, devoted enough friends, partners, mentors, lovers, employees, citizens, parents, cousins or motorists.
We calculate the weight of our souls.
And then the ball goes in the hoop.
And Ryan Ruocco shouts "YOU BET!"
Because there was never really any doubt.
When I first applied to be a part of this company I wrote "there comes a moment in every great sporting event where every single person watching realizes the events of the next 10 or so minutes are going to stay with them for as long as they live, and all that is left to determine is whether that is for better or for worse. The Neo-Futurists are the only company that has ever made me feel that in a theater."
Now every weekend I get to try and deliver that feeling on to the next person. We don't play characters, we tell the truth on stage. We take risks that are real and live with the consequences. We experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat and we invite the audience to experience them with us.
And when the show is over we either performed all 30 plays or we didn't, and we changed some audience member's life or we didn't, and the giant mess we made is still there.
Because there was never really any doubt.
