On October 28, 2023 we tragically lost our sister, Kelly M. Roseberry, and her son, Noah R. Roseberry, due to complications during labor caused by amniotic fluid embolism (AFE). A three-word medical term none of us had ever heard before, has irrevocably changed all our lives forever.
Kelly was a vibrant, healthy, 38-year-old woman, and Noah, a healthy, full-term baby boy, ready to meet the world. In our search to understand how these beautiful lives were lost so unexpectedly, myself and our family sought insights from close friends in the medical field, and the AFE Foundation. How, in this era of medical advancements, could such a tragedy still occur? The questions seemed endless.
Regrettably, we've learned that despite its rarity, AFE remains a devastating reality for families. Through AFE support groups, I've encountered many others who have endured similar unimaginable losses. The unfortunate truth is that there is insufficient understanding of AFE- it's under-researched and under-funded. Overall, it remains poorly understood. It is thought to be the result of an allergic-like reaction to amniotic fluid that enters the mother's bloodstream, a normal part of the birth process. It affects 1 in 40,000 women during or shortly after labor. It’s imperative that this complication receives more attention, and that women are made aware of its risks.
So, here we are.
As a family, we continue to navigate the grieving process, seeking ways to honor Kelly and Noah's memories. What feels best, right now, is to focus our efforts on raising awareness of AFE and supporting the AFE Foundation's endeavors in research, education, and support for affected families and healthcare providers. The AFE Foundation stands as a beacon of expertise in AFE education and research, as well as the primary support network for impacted families and medical professionals worldwide.
My hope is that through openness, sharing our journey, and fundraising efforts, AFE will no longer be an unfamiliar term.
