This year, my Birdathon is inspired by Rowland Emett’s whimsical vision of an ornithologist, disguised as a tree, pedaling through the Twittering Woods. His “A Suggested Ornithological Bird-Watching Bicycle” features nests that attract birds to a camera, and a "hands-free" monocular for viewing birds.
While I won't have a bicycle or a disguise, I'll sport a pair of binoculars and my Merlin app as I explore the avian wonders of Frederick County, Maryland.
This avian adventure offers us both an opportunity to engage in the beauty of nature, learn about Maryland’s diverse bird life, and support bird conservation:
My plan is to set out a promising day before May 19 to observe and record as many bird species as possible. I'll spend the day outdoors, exploring, and recording the avian species I encounter (aiming to spot at least 25 species throughout my day); and you will be able to engage vicariously when I share all the species I see!
Please support the Audubon Society of Central Maryland’s bird conservation and education work by donating to my Birdathon.
Thank you!

If you come to our back yard, you'll see a robin sitting on eggs in a nest, inside a wisteria vine. Not exotic, just doin' her thing.

Good luck with this year’s bird-a-thon!!! p.s., I think I need to invest in my own birdwatching bicycle. What a great idea! 😊
