In the isolated farmlands of the developing world, families are faced with impossible choices every day. When the rainy season hits and rivers flood, entire communities are cut off from schools, hospitals, markets and jobs. Residents have a choice: safety, or opportunity.
As a parent, do you keep your child home from school, and safe, or risk the dangerous river crossing to get them to class, giving them every chance at a quality education?
If you’re a pregnant woman in the throes of labor, do you attempt the unsafe crossing to get to the hospital or health clinic, or accept the risk of not receiving the medical attention you and your baby need?
Your elderly mother lives in the community on the other side of the river. Do you and your family make the dangerous crossing to check in on her, or remain safe at home but leave your mother isolated alone for days or weeks at a time?
Which would you choose?
Bridges to Prosperity believes those are choices that no one should have to make. Footbridges connect communities to schools, health clinics, and markets. But beyond that, they offer freedom from fear, worry, and risk. That kind of freedom is transformative.
