Thoroughbreds are versatile, athletic, and possess extraordinary hearts. Our mission is to provide a safe passage and future for these beautiful animals, who have given everything that has been asked of them, and more.
For more than a decade, the CTA team has worked diligently to provide a responsible process for Thoroughbreds that have been shipped to the islands for racing to be returned from the racetracks in healthy condition and ready for new careers and happily ever after's.
In the past 7 years CTA has retired more than 270 Thoroughbreds & placed 222 into good aftercare homes. These off-the-track thoroughbreds (OTTBs) new roles include Eventing, Dressage, Hunter-Jumper, Trail & Pleasure Riding, Equine-Assisted Therapy & Sanctuary, and loving Companions or even "Nanny" horses.
As a groundbreaking strategy for horse rescue and retirement in the Caribbean, CTA takes pride in its service to the local racing communities and to the many (primarily stateside) adopters who each play a vital part in the multi-faceted life journey of this noble and distinctive breed; the American Thoroughbred.
We have some unique challenges that further hinder helping horses. Puerto Rico is a small island 1,000 miles from the mainland, a few of our challenges are:
100% of the fund we raise goes to our horses. We use funds to rehab and retrain, to purchase feed, hay, provide hoof and dental care, pay for vet bills, medicine, and transport costs. Horses eligible to return to their homes in the US, we have to cover costs of $3294 which covers a 7 day USDA quarantine here in Puerto Rico, airfare to Miami and ground transport to our layover partner in Ocala.
