FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Many Haitian children eat just one meal a day--likely, the meal they get at school. One in five of Haiti’s children are chronically malnourished, and Haiti faces the highest level of food insecurity in the world, according to the UN’s World Food Programme.

You don’t need us to tell you it’s bad. You can see it anytime the news reports on Haiti.  But what the news doesn’t tell you is that ministries like Haitian Christian Mission have a plan, and are making a difference.  For more than 46 years, HCM has been feeding hungry school children and giving them the chance to learn.

Not long after the first HCM school opened, the ministry’s founder, Pastor Prophete, realized that children were distracted from their lessons by their growling belly.  If they were hungry, they wouldn’t be able to settle down and learn.  So with the help of donors, he and his Haitian team established a hot lunch program in HCM schools.  Studies have found that serving lunch will improve a child’s ability to focus and learning will increase along with their overall health. 

We’re hoping to raise $5,000 this month to cover the cost of feeding 2,789 Haitian school children for one month. By raising this money, we’ll ensure that these children have something nutritious to eat--and we’ll raise awareness of food scarcity in school children throughout Haiti!
