The short version:

So far, we've had the video produced and have over 800 petition signatures!

Now, we're raising money for the HPD Complaint App and website that will challenge Mayor Turner and Chief Acevedo's narative that "all is well with policing in Houston."

We're working collaboratively reaching out to families of survivors, organizers, advocates, etc. and things are still up in the air, but right now, but among the broad menu of suggestions to be included in an odrinance or state legislation so far:

1) There is no clear guidance with teeth telling an officer when he/she must turn on their body camera. For this reason, it appears the footage is somehow available when it benefits the officer, and never available when it would benefit a citizen’s side of the story.

***a policy with community input and disciplinary consequences would be a great first move.

2) We saw HPD kill two innocent citizens in their own homes after “Batman” (Officer Goines) somehow got a no-knock warrant from a municipal judge down at the city courthouse... man... a traffic court judge???

Anyway, I grew in South Park on Selinsky and when I found out it was him, I was not at all surprised. Why? I have, at minimum, 10 friends with stories about illegal/questionable stuff that man did while in uniform.

There is no PUBLIC clearinghouse to track complaints on officers. A few years ago, I went down to HPD headquarters to make a formal complaint against two officers. Did the whole mediation thing... and to be honest, it was fodder.

For all I know, that was complaint #98 on those officers.

As a former lieutenant of correctional officers, I know what happens when a bad officer gets away with something small... he goes for something a little bigger next time... then before you know it, he’s invincible, or thinks he is.

There should be a public clearing house where citizens can track the bad behavior/complaints of the officers packing guns in their neighborhoods.

3) A citizens review board with subpoena power is needed. Right now, we have the fox watching the henhouse, and there’s no real punishment when officers do wrong... even if it’s a mistake.

We need an external board with power to run concurrent investigations as your agency and the district attorney are running theirs.

4) A Third Party tool to track police complaints externally.

5). Requiring police to pay for the funerals/burials of those losing their lives, unarmed, at the hands of police.

There's an exaustive list that a group of folks are working on.

Right now we need this $1500.
