As a founding board member, and current Board President of Konbit Sante, I am excited to share our 25th Anniversary fundraiser with you. For many of you, Konbit Sante is an old friend, for others, this small, impactful, women and children focused organization in Northern Haiti is new. Earlier this summer, our advisor and founding Executive Director Nate Nickerson passed away after a brief illness. I first met Nate in 2002 shortly after we started the organization; since then Nate has been a mentor and beloved friend. I worked with him and had him as a sounding board for nearly my entire medical career. His passing has brought intense sadness, but has also allowed space for deep reflection on who he was to me, what Konbit Sante has meant to me and my family, and why after decades of experience working in the global health space all over the world with big organizations, the US government, United Nations partners, my heart and philosophy on how best to support the world's most vulnerable people always come back to Konbit Sante. As we shared in our recent communication, Nate often used the phrase “continuous positive pressure.” The phrase comes from Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP, a simple but life-saving intervention used to help newborns and other patients breathe when they are in distress. In many ways, Nate adopted the phrase as a philosophy for Konbit Sante’s work in Haiti. Not grand gestures. Not quick fixes. Just the steady sustained support that helps people keep moving forward, even during difficult moments. The belief that if you keep showing up, keep working together, and keep investing in people, meaningful change will happen. That spirit continues to shape Konbit Sante’s work every single day.
