Campaign Description

"What is a midwife", you ask?

A Certified Professional Midwife is a health care professional who cares for healthy birthing people during their preventive prenatal care, labor, delivery, and through the first 6 weeks after the birth of their babies. In Wisconsin, Certified Professional Midwives are licensed by the state and may deliver babies at birthing centers or at home.

How is midwifery care valuable to our communities?

  • The American Public Health Association and the World Health Organization recommends midwives as the primary maternity care providers for the majority of women. The Millbank Report: Evidence-Based Maternity Care recognizes the CPM as the benchmark for low intervention and good outcomes
  • Nations with the lowest infant mortality employ midwives as the primary maternity care providers for the majority of women
  • Mounting evidence supports the value and cost-savings potential of midwifery care, according to a report issued by the Washington Department of Health in 2010
  • Birth centers and planned home births have been shown to be safe for low-risk birthing people, with demonstrated potential to significantly reduce costs

Accessible culturally competent and empowering midwifery care is vital to a thriving community and has always been an essential component of our societies - however, pathways to accessible, harm-free student midwifery programs  continue to decrease leaving Black and Brown student midwives in need of safe spaces to learn, apprentice, and grow their skills on the way to serving our community from a place of wellness.

Having a solid educational foundation is vital for the sustainability of midwifery. Your donation will help to cover the cost of textbooks, coursework, clinical supplies, training, and healing justice to ensure the continued wellness for Black and Brown student midwives in Southeast Wisconsin.

If you're able, please donate and share!
