Dear Family and Friends,
I am happy to share that this November, I get to run the New York City Marathon! The best part about it is that it is not for me, but on behalf of an organization that I believe in, New Life Community Development Corporation, or CDC. Over the past year, the CDC has enabled me to take to the streets of Queens to support my neighbors in need, and now I’ll run the streets of all five boroughs to help raise funds for the organization.
Prior to serving with the CDC, I had a patchy history of volunteering at different organizations across the city. It was good to get out there and serve, but I always felt that I wanted to participate in something more local, something that was close to home. I wanted it to be a regular practice out of gratitude for the blessings I have received. Serving with the CDC has been that for me. On a couple of Saturdays a month, I get to serve with the food pantry alongside a group of people that are united in having a heart for uplifting our neighbors. We pack and deliver packages of non-perishable pantry items and fresh produce to 40-50 families each week. And it’s all within running distance from home.
Running the marathon this year gives me an opportunity to share this story and this organization with all of you. While my small contribution of time helps to address the issue of food insecurity in Elmhurst, Queens, the CDC does so much more. From the health center to programs in emotional wellness, financial empowerment, and youth leadership, the CDC brings a wholistic approach to confronting cycles of intergenerational poverty.
I am asking you, as people who are a part of my story, to make a contribution and also be a part of the CDC’s story. And don’t think that a financial contribution is the only way to get involved. Come deliver groceries with me one Saturday morning! I promise you will at least be entertained by my attempts to communicate in Spanish. Or fill out the volunteer interest form to see if your skills match up with another program that the CDC does.
Thanks so much for reading this far and I am grateful for your support! I’m both nervous and excited to run this thing, but I’m looking forward to taking you all with me on those 26.2 miles.

Good luck!
