Strength Based Community Change

At SBCC we believe that everyone has a gift and talent, and that ordinary people are capable or extraordinary things. All year long and all throughout COVID, SBCC has been there across LA County helping co-create real change with real residents. 

The video below is a demonstration of the planning stages that have taken place with different communities, stakeholders, and other agencies across the county. Our goal is to elevate and provide a platform for residents to demand change and advocate for what they believe in. 

I Heart Farming

Across LA County SBCC has many community gardens. Some resident led, others ran by volunteers and staff. The common denominator of all these is the belief of healthy and sustainable food sources across neighborhoods. Every garden offers a variety of opportunities for residents that never met one another to create a community and barter with each other. SBCC currently has a community garden in Compton, Long Beach, Watts, Wilmington, West Athens, East LA, and the Antelope Valley. 

This year SBCC had its grand opening of a 2 acre farm in Wilmington. The urban farm not only provides this area that is considered a food desert with much needed green space, but the land is so massive that 60+ garden beds, a fully built community kitchen, a green house, parking, and a compost area only covers HALF of the lot. The second portion of the farm will house 80 different fruit trees, an amphitheater, a complete chicken coop, a goat house and possibly even a bee sanctuary. 

The farm addresses many of the concerns of the community, and has already hosted multiple events that held over 300 families.

SBCC offers many resources to the community like Preschool Without Walls, Community Based Doulas, Career Pathways, Relative Support Services, Counseling/ Coaching, Entrepreneur Development, Youth Co-Lab leadership and much more.
