  • Save a Landmark; Build a Reproductive Justice Future
Campaign Description

In 2014, abortion laws closed the two abortion clinics serving the Rio Grande Valley border. Only one clinic reopened. 8 years later, that clinic is now permanently shuttered...so we've launched a campaign to purchase the building.

WHO WE ARE

  • South Texans for Reproductive Justice was created in 2014 as Texas laws increasingly attacked abortion access.
  • We founded the clinic escort program at the now-shuttered abortion clinic in McAllen, Texas.
  • We are currently a 501(c)3 non-profit that serves 12 counties across South Texas.
  • We distribute free emergency contraception, sexual health resources, and bilingual sex education materials.

OUR VISION FOR A REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE CENTER

  • To provide a safe location for people to take pregnancy tests and pick up free emergency contraception, sexual health resources, and other forms of material aid
  • To have a place for community members to participate in feminist, reproductive justice-oriented activities and volunteer opportunities
  • To create collaborative workspaces for people doing reproductive justice work in South Texas, including a conference room for trainings

There is nothing like this in South Texas.

No matter what, we will continue to help ensure that our gente most in need are able to remain autonomous in their pregnancy decisions, but we can't do this without you. Time is of the essence. This is our home, and we're not leaving.

FAQ

WHY DO YOU WANT A FORMER ABORTION CLINIC?

STRJ got our start there and defended the patients from violence and harassment for more than half a decade. We were who the police called when there was an attempted arson attack, and we were the ones who organized all of the big counter-protests to protect the clinic during the annual March for Life. We value the history of the building and recognize its importance as a literal rallying point for the community.

WHY IS YOUR GOAL $400,000?

The building is listed at $275,000. However, it is currently designed as a medical space with exam rooms, etc. We will need extra funds to cover closing costs, repairs, and remodeling in order convert it into a collaborative workspace.

WHAT IF THE BUILDING GETS SOLD?

The building is publicly listed. If someone else buys it first, that's out of our control. STRJ will aim to secure a space in a central location near a crisis pregnancy center. We will move forward with our vision for a more equitable future regardless.
