A School Without Toilets?  How Would That Be?

What if your school didn’t have toilets, or maybe only had one that you had to share with 200 other students and teachers, so that while trying to concentrate on learning, you were distracted by how, when, and where you were going to relieve yourself?

This is What Happens to Children When There Are No Toilets or Handwashing Stations...

In many schools, children are forced to relieve themselves in open outdoor spaces because the existing facilities are dilapidated or non-existent. With no handwashing stations, children can’t wash their hands before eating food or after play, leading to poor hygiene and vulnerability to illness.

Open toileting is an issue that affects everyone, but for women and girls it’s particularly risky. Schoolgirls reduce their liquid and food intake to avoid this situation, negatively affecting their health, and many are told not to attend school during their menstruation cycles.

PRASAD is helping to solve this sanitation problem by building hygienic toilets in five local schools. So far, two schools have new facilities.

A Success Story at Kelthan Village School

Despite having a large student body, Kelthan Village School had only one toilet. PRASAD sponsored construction of separate toilet blocks for boys and girls and a shared handwashing station.

The school principal, Mrs. Vibha Patil, remarked, “Before, our five teachers and nearly two hundred children were using a single, dilapidated toilet. It was very awkward, especially for the girls. The children had to stand in long lines during recess to answer nature’s call. On behalf of the entire school, I offer a big thanks for the quality of the work.”
