When Ellenie was 3-months-old, she was diagnosed with urticaria pigmentosa, a form of mastocytosis. She started with one spot that appeared on her back, and soon the spots covered her body. With this form of mastocytosis, children’s bodies overproduce mast cells, an important part of the immune system. The mast cells become lodged in their skin, appearing as spots.

As new parents, we didn't know what to do or how this diagnosis could affect her life. Her condition is fortunately on the milder side, but it's important to note that other kids with pediatric mastocytosis may experience reactions triggered by a variety of things we encounter daily to include household items, personal care products, environmental factors, or certain foods. The itching from one of these triggering events can feel like thousands of mosquito bites, and children can become nauseous, causing vomiting. There is no known cure for mastocytosis and more funding is needed for research to help those who have it. Every year for my birthday, I fundraise for this effort so that a cure can be found, or we can find additional ways to help cope with mastocytosis.
